10/31-11/1 Monday-Tuesday

Guiding Question:
What issues in our community can we help solve through the legislative branch?
What are the origins of some of the most popular Halloween myths?

Objectives:

Students will work to increase their Lexile levels by determining the central ideas of an Achieve article about the powers of government, completing all five tabs including summarizing the Dig Deeper section, and score at least 75% on the activity.

Students will work to brainstorm issues in their community by engaging in a collaborative discussion with their groups and filling out a form with 100% completion.

Standards:
HSS.8.2.6 - Enumerate the powers of government set forth in the Constitution
RH.6-8.2 - Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source
SL.8.1 - Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions
ELD A.1 - Exchanging information with others through oral collaborative discussions

Do Now (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes:
On a half sheet of paper, write today's objectives in your own words. What are the activities you will be completing and how do you know whether or not you completed them?

Whole Group (Voice Level 0) 10 minutes:
What is the Legislative Branch responsible for Recap &  PBL introduction

Independent (Voice Level 0) 30 minutes:

Task 1: Achieve3000, "The Branches of Government." You need to complete all 5 tabs for this article.

- You only need to summarize paragraphs that are more than two sentences! You may write your summaries as bullet points for my class.

- Your thought question answer only needs to be 3-4 sentences.

- Achieve articles are summative grades. You cannot get higher than an NP if you did not summarize. Yes you need to summarize the Dig Deeper section! In order to complete a "makeup Achieve" you need to also complete all 5 tabs and the summaries on your makeup article as well.

Early Finishers: Watch this or complete any missing assignments.

At the end of this station, reflect on the objectives you just worked to complete. On your paper you need to write whether or not you met the objective AND how you know this. For example, "Yes I met this objective because I completed all five tabs for the article, summarized everything including the dig deeper, and I scored 88% on the activity!"

Collaborative (Voice Level .5 - 1) 30 minutes:

Task 2: Brainstorm issues in South Los Angeles on the board

Task 3: Fill out this google form with your collaborative groups. I will be printing copies for each group and handing them to you the next time we work on this assignment so that you will have your ideas in front of you.

Did your group finish early? Read this and this.

At the end of this station, reflect on the objective you just worked to complete. On your paper you need to write whether or not you met the objective AND how you know this. For example, "Yes, I met the objective because I was able to annotate and I am confident I answered at least 8 of the 9 questions correctly."

Whole Group (Voice Level 0) 20 minutes:

Since it is Halloween/the day after we are going to spend a little time learning about the origins of some spooky Halloween myths. Are Vampires real? What about werewolves? Why do we dress up for Halloween?

Exit Ticket (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes:
What issue did your collaborative group decide on for the PBL?

Homework:
Make sure you have completed all assignments from today.
