Guiding Question:
What is the Monroe Doctrine?


Objectives:
Collaborative: Students will understand the influence the Monroe Doctrine had on westward expansion by reading collaboratively in groups and participating in a "Save the Last Word for Me" discussion with a score of at least 3/4 according to the rubric. 

Independent: Students will work to increase their Lexile levels by determining the central ideas of an Achieve article about the national anthem, completing the first four tabs, and scoring at least 75% on the activity. 



Standards:


8.5.2 - Know the changing boundaries of the United States and describe the relationships the country had with its neighbors (current Mexico and Canada) and Europe, including the influence of the Monroe Doctrine, and how those relationships influenced westward expansion and the Mexican-American War
CCRA.R.1 – Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

Do Now (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes: 
On your objective tracker, dissect the objectives you will be working to complete for today. Be prepared to explain the objectives in your own words if I call on you. 

Whole Group (Voice Level 0) 10 minutes: 
American settlement westward, end of the New Nation Period and bleeding into "Westward Expansion"
Unit 5 Recap/Unit 6 Intro

Independent (Voice Level 0) 40 minutes:


Task 1: Achieve3000, "A Nation's Song" You need to complete the first 4 tabs for this article. 

- You only need to summarize paragraphs that are more than two sentences! You may write your summaries as bullet points for my class. 

- Achieve articles are summative grades. You cannot get higher than an NP if you did not summarize.  In order to complete a "makeup Achieve" you need to also complete the first 4 tabs and the summaries on your makeup article as well. 

Task 2: Watch CNN Student News and complete this google form. Make sure you are watching the video from Monday, February 6th 2017!

Task 3: Review some information from today and preview the rest of our week by watching this video on Andrew Jackson. 

Early Finishers: Play Free Rice, read an article on NewsELA, complete any missing assignments, contemplate the meaning of life. 

At the end of this station, complete the "next steps" portion for that station's objective. If you met the objective, write "none" in that box. 

Collaborative (Voice Level .5 - 1) 40 minutes: 
Step 1: Read this source about the Monroe Doctrine as a station
Step 2: Assign guiding questions to each group member & follow Save the Last Word for Me protocol 


At the end of this station, complete the "next steps" portion for that station's objective. If you met the objective, write "none" in that box. 

Exit Ticket (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes: 
Flip to the calendar section of your Objective Tracker. Add a + for each objective you completed for today and a - for objectives you were not able to complete. 

Homework: 
Make sure that you have completed the CNN Student news google form.
