11/14-15 Monday-Tuesday

Guiding Question:
Who can we ask for help with issues that face our community?

Objectives:

Students will work to increase their Lexile levels by determining the central ideas of an Achieve article about the three branches of government, completing all five tabs including summarizing the Dig Deeper section, and score at least 75% on the activity.

Students will participate in the political system by writing a clear and coherent letter to one of their state or federal representatives about their PBL issue and what their group is doing to help with a score of at least 3/4 according to the rubric.

Standards:
HSS.8.3 - Students will understand the ways in which citizens participate in the American political system.
RH.6-8.2 - Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source
W.8.4 - Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience.
ELD B.6 - Read closely to determine how meaning is made.

Do Now (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes:
On a half sheet of paper, write today's objectives in your own words. What are the activities you will be completing and how do you know whether or not you completed them?

Whole Group (Voice Level 0) 10 minutes:

PBL Timeline Review!

Independent (Voice Level 0) 40 minutes:

Task 1: Achieve3000, "Finding the Right Balance" You need to complete all 5 tabs for this article.

- You only need to summarize paragraphs that are more than two sentences! You may write your summaries as bullet points for my class.

- Your thought question answer only needs to be 3-4 sentences.

- Achieve articles are summative grades. You cannot get higher than an NP if you did not summarize. Yes you need to summarize the Dig Deeper section! In order to complete a "makeup Achieve" you need to also complete all 5 tabs and the summaries on your makeup article as well.

Task 2: Watch CNN Student News and complete the assignment in Google Classroom.

Early Finishers: Go to CNN, NewsELA, Free Rice, work on your PBL Action Plan, or complete any makeup work.

At the end of this station, reflect on the objectives you just worked to complete. On your paper you need to write whether or not you met the objective AND how you know this. For example, "Yes I met this objective because I completed all five tabs for the article, summarized everything including the dig deeper, and I scored 88% on the activity!"

Direct/Collaborative (Voice Level .5 - 1) 40 minutes:

Task 1: We will be looking at a PearDeck presentation for Writing an Effective Letter.

If you weren't in class today, here is a transcript of what we will be going over:  Writing an Effective Letter

Task 2: We will be writing letters to our representatives about the issues selected by our groups for the PBL.

Each letter should address a State or Federal representative and include background on your issue and why you chose it and also telling your representative what you and your group have completed to help with that problem, and finally ask them to help as well.

Need some help?
Level 1 Support - "I'm pretty sure I've got this, but let me double check"
Level 2 Support - "I've kinda got this, but I need some sentence starters."
Level 3 Support - "I have no idea what I'm doing, please help!"

Need to look up your representatives? State representatives are here and federal representatives are here.

Early Finishers: Complete any missing work (grades are due WEDNESDAY!), watch this video, or read an article on NewsELA

At the end of this station, reflect on the objective you just worked to complete. On your paper you need to write whether or not you met the objective AND how you know this. For example, "Yes, I met the objective because I was able to annotate and I am confident I answered at least 8 of the 9 questions correctly."

Exit Ticket (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes:
Why is it important that we work to monitor and influence our government?
Homework:
Finish your letters, we will be peer editing them tomorrow!
