Guiding Question:
How did the election of Abraham Lincoln lead to Civil War?


Objectives:
Collaborative (Whole Group): Students will learn about the election of Abraham Lincoln and the South's secession by collaboratively reading and answering questions with at least 80% accuracy. 


Standards:
8.10 Students analyze the multiple causes, key events, and complex consequences of the Civil War.
CCRA.R.1 – Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
ELD B.6 - Reading closely to determine how meaning is made.

Do Now (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes: 
On your objective tracker, dissect the objectives you will be working to complete for today. Be prepared to explain the objectives in your own words if I call on you. 

Whole Group (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes: 
Lincoln's Election Intro

Whole Group Collaborative (Voice Level .5 - 1) 30 minutes: 
Early Finisher? Do the homework by Watch this BrainPop video on the causes of the Civil War in order to  complete this Google Form.  Play Free Rice, read an article on NewsELA, etc.

At the end of this station, complete the "next steps" portion for that station's objective. If you met the objective, write "none" in that box. 



Whole Group  (Voice Level 0) 25 minutes: 
Watch part of Episode 1 of Ken Burns' Civil War: Causes. 

Exit Ticket (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes: 
Flip to the calendar section of your Objective Tracker. Add a + for each objective you completed for today and a - for objectives you were not able to complete.
