Guiding Question:
What was the role of Pioneer Women in the West?


Objectives:
Collaborative: By the end of the week, students will analyze and describe the role of women in the west by reading, responding to text-dependent questions, and completing a news article with a score of at least 3/4 according to the rubric.

Independent: 
By the end of the period, students will be able to increase their lexile levels by completing an Achieve Article about pioneering women, including all summaries, with a score of at least 75% on the activity.



Standards:
Standard:. 8.8.3 - Describe the role of pioneer women and the new status that western women achieved (e.g., Laura Ingalls Wilder, Annie Bidwell; slave women gaining freedom in the West; Wyoming granting suffrage to women in 1869).
RI.8.2 - Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to supporting ideas; provide an objective summary of the text.

- On your objective tracker, dissect the objectives you will be working to complete for today. Be prepared to explain the objectives in your own words if I call on you.

Task 1: Achieve3000, "Women Who Led the Way". You need to complete the first 4 tabs for this article. 

- You only need to summarize paragraphs that are more than two sentences! You may write your summaries as bullet points for my class. 

- Achieve articles are summative grades. You cannot get higher than an NP if you did not summarize.  In order to complete a "makeup Achieve" you need to also complete the first 4 tabs and the summaries on your makeup article as well. 

Task 2: Watch CNN10 and complete the assignment in Google Classroom. 

Early Finishers: Complete any missing or makeup work, play Free Rice, read an article on NewsELA, read a book, contemplate the meaning of life, or watch this documentary about the Mexican-American War. 


Collaborative (Voice Level .5 - 1) 45 minutes: 
Step 2: Complete the TDQs in your group 
Step 3: Start your news article (homework assignment) based on information you learned.
