1/11 Wednesday

Guiding Question:
What were some highlights and areas of improvement from Semester 1?
What is going on in the world around us?

Objectives:
Students will investigate a current event by reading an article closely, filling out a graphic organizer, and writing a clear and coherent summary with a score of 3/4 or better according to the rubric.

Standards:
CCRA.R.1 – Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it

WHST.6-8.4 - Produce clear and coherent writing

ELD B.6 - Reading closely literary and informational texts and viewing multimedia to determine how meaning is conveyed.
Do Now (Voice Level 1) 5 Minutes:
Find your new seat, take out your winter packet & fill out the handout Ms. Cobb gave you.

Whole Group (Voice Level 1) 10 Minutes:
Task 1: Go over Student Satisfaction Survey results from Semester 1. What activities did you like, what didn't you like, and what I'm changing for second semester.

Independent (Voice Level 0) 25 Minutes:
You have 25 minutes to investigate a current event of your choice from NewsELA. Username is ComaCobb and the password is history.

For NewsELA, remember to log in with username "ComaCobb" and password "history".

Fill out the graphic organizer and write your summary. Here is a rubric for your current event papers.

Need some help with your summaries? Use the questions on the front of your paper as sentence starters. "The title of my story is...", "This story is affecting..." etc. Almost all of you did an awesome job with this last week and the week before!!

Early Finishers: Read another article on NewsELA, watch CNN student news, ponder the meaning of life.

Whole Group (Voice Level .5 - 1) 7 minutes:
We will be pair-sharing our current events and I will randomly select 2-3 students to share with the whole class the "5 W's" for their news story.

Homework:
Complete your current event worksheet and summary.
