Guiding Question: 
What was the experience of the settlers of Jamestown? 



Objectives: 
Students will be able to analyze the causes of the deaths of many early settlers in Jamestown by reading, annotating, and answering questions with at least 80% accuracy. 

Students will be able to increase their lexiles by reading an Achieve article on Jamestown, summarizing, and scoring at least a 75% on the activity. 

Students will read informational texts on Jamestown closely to determine how meaning is conveyed. 

Standards: 
CA HSS 8.1 – Students understand the major events preceding the founding of the nation and relate their significant to the development of American constitutional democracy.


RH.6-8.22 - Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source

RH.6-8.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text

WHST.6-8.9 - Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research 

ELD B.6 - Reading closely literary and informational texts and viewing multimedia to determine how meaning is conveyed.


Do Now (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes: 
On a half sheet of paper, please answer the following question: If you decided to join England's first colony in North America what supplies would you bring with you? What types of people would you want to settle North America with you? 




Whole Group (Voice Level 0) 15 minutes: 
Introduction to Jamestown: England's First Permanent (successful) Colony. 


Independent (Voice Level 0) 45 minutes: 
Task 1:  Complete the Achieve Article, "America Looks Back". You must complete all 5 tabs, which include the before reading poll, summarizing the article, activity, after reading poll, and the thought question. 

- You only need to summarize paragraphs that are more than two sentences! 

- Achieve articles are summative grades. 

Task 2: Watch this BrainPop video on the Iroquois Confederacy. The username and password for Brainpop are different from last year. Username is 123dog and password is 123cat.


Early Finishers: You may read quietly, complete another Word Wall, or watch this video on the lost colony of Roanoke. I highly recommend the video, it's freaky! 

Collaborative (Voice Level .5 - 1) 45 minutes: 
We will be reading an annotating the Background Essay and Document A for our Jamestown DBQ. 



Exit Ticket (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes: 
What do the deaths of so many settlers at Jamestown tell you about settling North America? In other words, why do you think being an early settler was risky? 



Homework: 
Finish answering the questions from the DBQ packet. I will be checking off your Background Essay and Document A on Wednesday.
