Guiding Question: 
Why did so many families travel to New England? 



Objectives: 
Students will analyze the reasons why colonists traveled to New England by reading and answering guiding questions with at least 80% accuracy. 

Students will increase their lexiles by reading an Achieve article about the early history of New York, summarize, and complete the activity with a score of at least 75%. 

Standards: 
CA HSS 8.1 – Students understand the major events preceding the founding of the nation and relate their significant to the development of American constitutional democracy.


CCRA.R.1 – Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it

RH.6-8.7 – Integrate visual information with other information in print and digital texts. 

ELD B.6 - Reading closely literary and informational texts and viewing multimedia to determine how meaning is conveyed.


Do Now (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes: 
Objective form. Write down today's objectives in your own words. What are the activities you will be completing? How do you know whether or not you were successful?

Whole Group (Voice Level 0) 15 minutes: 
Introduction to New England Colonies. 



Independent (Voice Level 0) 45 minutes: 
Task 1: Complete the Achieve Article, "Show Marks 400 Years Since Hudson Set Sail."  You must complete all 5 tabs, which include the before reading poll, summarizing the article, activity, after reading poll, and the thought question. 

- You only need to summarize paragraphs that are more than two sentences! You may write your summaries as bullet points for my class. 

- Achieve articles are summative grades. You cannot get higher than an NP if you did not summarize. In order to complete a "makeup Achieve" you need to also complete all 5 tabs and the summaries on your makeup article as well. 

Task 2: Watch this video on the colonies and take notes in a circle map. You need at least 12 notes in your circle. After, you need to write one paragraph (5-8 sentences) summarizing the video. You may complete this paragraph on the backside or underneath your circle map. 

Collaborative (Voice Level .5 - 1) 45 minutes: 
We will be jigsawing a reading on the New England colonies from your text books in our groups. Each group member will be given a different section to complete. After 20 minutes you will be expected to exchange answers. 

We will also be doing our first trade & grade in this station!

Objective self-reflection form. Did you meet all of the objectives for today? What are you going to do to make sure you meet them before the next class? 

Homework: 
Finish your video notes and summary paragraph from independent station. This is due Wednesday!
