Guiding Question: 
How do the experiences of immigrants today compare to the immigration stories of the early colonists? 

Students will investigate a current event related to immigration by reading an article, filling out a graphic organizer, and writing a summary with a score of 3/4 or better according to the rubric. 

Students will read an informational text closely to determine how meaning is conveyed.

Do Now (Voice Level 1) 10 Minutes: 
Current Event Quizizz. Go to www.join.quizizz.com and enter in the code that is on the projector. The class with the highest total questions correct wins a class point. 

Whole Group (Voice Level 0)  5 Minutes: 

Immigration: America's past and present. 

Independent (Voice Level 0) 20 Minutes: 
You will have 20 minutes to investigate an article from NewsELA on Immigration. Username is ComaCobb and the password is history. 

For NewsELA, remember to log in with username "ComaCobb" and password "history". 

Here is a list of NewsELA articles on immigration. 

Fill out the graphic organizer and write your summary. Here is a rubric for your current event papers. 

Need some help with your summaries? Use the questions on the front of your paper as sentence starters. "The title of my story is...", "This story is affecting..." etc. Almost all of you did an awesome job with this last week and the week before!! 

Early Finishers: Read another article from the text set. 

Whole Group (Voice Level .5 - 1) 5 minutes: 
We will be pair-sharing our current events and I will randomly select 2-3 students to share with the whole class the "5 W's" for their news story. 

Finish your current event summaries.
