Guiding Question:
What were the most important battles fought in the East during the Civil War?


Objectives:
Collaborative: Students will learn about the battles of First Bull Run and Antietam by reading a source, completing prewriting strategies, and writing a CEREAL paragraph with a score of at least 3/4 according to the rubric. 

Independent: Students will learn about the Union's naval strategy by reading, watching a video, and answering guiding questions with at least 80% accuracy. 



Standards:

8.10.6 - Describe critical developments and events in the war, including the major battles, geographical advantages and obstacles, technological advances, and General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.
W.1 - Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence
ELD B.6 - Read closely to determine how meaning is made

Do Now (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes: 
- On your objective tracker, dissect the objectives you will be working to complete for today. Be prepared to explain the objectives in your own words if I call on you. 

Whole Group (Voice Level 0) 10 minutes: 
Independent (Voice Level 0) 45 minutes:
Task 1: Complete the Webquest in Google Classroom about the Union's naval strategy. 

Task 2: Watch this BrainPop video about the Civil War and write me a 7-10 sentence summary. Share your summaries with ecobb@laalliance.org or complete it on a piece of paper. 

Early Finisher? Watch this, and/or this video, play Free Rice, read an Achieve article, complete missing or late work, research slavery in the antebellum South. Have you finished your 8th grade portfolio assignments? It might be a good idea to work on those! 

Collaborative (Voice Level .5 - 1) 45 minutes: 
Task 2: Complete the pre-writing steps. 
Task 3: Write a CEREAL Paragraph
