Guiding Question:
What themes in the Declaration of Independence are still important today?

Objectives:
Students will work to increase their lexiles by reading an article about the Declaration of Independence, completing all five tabs including summarizing the Dig Deeper section, and score at least a 75% on the activity.

Students will investigate the Declaration of Independence by working in partners to match the original text to a modern translation of the Declaration and answer guiding questions with at least 80% accuracy.

Standards:

CA HSS.8.1.2 - Analyze the philosophy of government expressed in the Declaration of Independence

RH.6-8.2 - Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source

RH.6-8.4 - Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text

WHST.6-8.9 - Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research

ELD B.6 - Reading closely literary and informational texts and viewing multimedia to determine how meaning is conveyed.

Do Now (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes:
Re-write today's objectives in your own words. What are the activities you will be completing and how will you know whether or not you met today's objectives?

Whole Group (Voice Level 0) 10 minutes:
Introduction to the Declaration of Independence - America's breakup letter to England.

Independent (Voice Level 0) 40 minutes:

Task 1: Achieve3000, "Even Jefferson Made Mistakes."  You need to complete all 5 tabs for this article.

If you already did this article (I noticed at least two of you did this article as a make-up), you need to do "Age of Revolution: Where Heroes Walked"

- You only need to summarize paragraphs that are more than two sentences! You may write your summaries as bullet points for my class.

- Your thought question answer only needs to be 3-4 sentences.

- Achieve articles are summative grades. You cannot get higher than an NP if you did not summarize. Yes you need to summarize the Dig Deeper section! In order to complete a "makeup Achieve" you need to also complete all 5 tabs and the summaries on your makeup article as well.

Task 2: Complete the close reading activity about the Declaration of Independence in Google Classroom.

Early Finishers: Complete another Achieve article, read silently, work on other homework, or watch this video

At the end of this station, reflect on the objective you just worked to complete. On your paper you need to write whether or not you met the objective AND how you know this. For example, "Yes I met this objective because I completed all five tabs for the article, summarized everything including the dig deeper, and I scored 88% on the activity!"

Collaborative (Voice Level .5 - 1) 40 minutes:

We will be completing the Declaration of Independence matrix in our table groups. You will need to match the original language from the declaration with the "translated" version.

After I have approved your matches, you need to write the "translated" version onto your piece of paper and then answer the questions. You cannot begin writing unless I sign off on your matches!

At the end of this station, reflect on the objective you just worked to complete. On your paper you need to write whether or not you met the objective AND how you know this. For example, "Yes, I met the objective because I was able to annotate and I am confident I answered at least 8 of the 9 questions correctly."

Exit Ticket (Voice Level 0) 5 minutes:
Somewhere on your objective reflection sheet, please answer the following question: What view did the Founding Father's have of government? In other words, where did the Founding Fathers think government power should come from?

Homework:
Complete the close reading activity about the Declaration of Independence in Google Classroom.
